Sports Scores of 1968
Great Sports Scores of 1968: Green Bay Packers 33, Oakland Raiders 14
In the second meeting between the champions of the NFL and the champions of the AFL, which would later come to be known as Super Bowl II, the players from the AFL were different, but the NFL champion and the outcome were pretty much the same. With the NFL still enjoying all the top players, the Green Bay Packers dominated once again, defeating a young Oakland Raiders team decisively, with a 33 to 14 victory on the arm of Hall of Fame quarterback Bart Starr down in the Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida.
Great Sports Scores of 1968: Montreal Canadiens 4, St. Louis Blues 0
This is one of those sports scores of 1968 that Blues fans would probably just as soon forget. The Montreal Canadiens, fresh off their defeat to the Toronto Maple Leafs the previous year, returned to the Stanley Cup in 1968 with a vengeance. They offered Scotty Bowman’s St. Louis team no quarter, and in Game 3, outshot the Blues a mind-boggling 46 to 15. The Canadiens quickly swept the Blues away in four games. This does not tell the whole story, however, as the Blues, largely due to their stellar goalie Glenn Hall, in fact did offer some resistance. Each game was decided by a single goal, with two of those goals being scored in overtime.
Great Sports Scores of 1968: Detroit Tigers 4, St. Louis Cardinals 3
The Cardinals returned to the World Series to defend their title in 1968, and hoped to contribute to the sports scores of 1968 by providing another 4 to 3 victory. They did, but this time the victory was for the Detroit Tigers, who took the Cardinals out in 7 games. The great Bob Gibson did his part, winning Games 1 and 4, with decisive scores of 4-0 and 10-1 respectively, but his legendary arm finally failed him after 6 innings of Game 7, and the three runs he gave up in the 7th were enough to secure the Detroit Tigers and their star pitcher, Mickey Lolich, a 1968 World Series victory.
Great Sports Scores of 1968: Boston Celtics 4, Los Angeles Lakers 2
Including the Celtics and Lakers among the great sports scores of 1968 is almost a given. These two teams have battled more in the NBA Championship Finals than any other basketball teams in history, and have both easily made more finals appearances than any other teams as well. Every dynasty from both of these teams had some legendary players, and this one was no exception, featuring Bill Russell as Center and head coach for the Boston Celtics, and Elgin Baylor and Jerry West as Forwards for the Los Angeles Lakers.
